The Polish Suite

This group of five , 40 x 30 inch canvases , from 2011, was so named because they were completed in response to a request from a Polish friend for a commission for him and his daughter. They had liked a large work from the Easter Island Suite which was too large for their Rome apartment and their Edmonton home, so I set to work making some smaller works.  

This suite was the result of this exploration and although this is not the diptych that I eventually came up with for them, it shares many of the same characteristics. The collage colour and drawing, in these works, create for me a serious yet warm character with an underlying sense of aged richness.

The Polish people have a rich and diverse culture which has suffered many adversities in its history but is undaunted. I hope these collages express some 'Polish characteristics' for you
