The Montrose Suite 2014Click here or on the painting to visit this GalleryConsists of 28 collages, 14 x 11 inches (sold individually) Montrose is an avenue in Victoria B.C where I have a home. Since 2002 the house garden and landscaping has played an invigorating role in my life and the life of my family. This suite of 28 collages is dedicated and inspired by those experiences. The colour range and character is wide and diverse echoing the many moods and seasons associated with my experiences. While they do not attempt to depict or illustrate those experiences they do evoke feelings and association with my times there. All colours, marks and surfaces evoke sensations which register with us in whatever way we associate them to our own personal experiences. I began these works by choosing pieces of off cut painted canvas from previous work and proceeded to paint colours alongside which are suggested through contemplation and in order to find a balance between all the parts to a point of unity where everything becomes alive. This is formally often discussed in terms of figure ground relationships, where all of the surface becomes active. The painter Hans Hoffman would refer to this as the push and pull of the ground relationships. |
