The Bruxelles SuiteClick here or on the painting to visit this GalleryThese original works are formed by bringing together pieces of previously painted acrylic on canvas. The compositions resemble forms in nature, especially landscape, trees and mountains. These associations are inherent and are indirectly cultivated in the topographical way in which I paint (pouring paint flat on the floor, allowing and causing, fissures and patterns in the paint to form). The range of colour and composition of these pieces is typical of my wide-ranging palette and share the same positive spirit as in my larger scale canvases. I combined thin strips in vertical bands on a canvas ground and I realized by making these small collages that this also offered some possibilities for adding these painted off-cuts in my larger paintings. This interest in collage was first triggered by the invitation of Belgian philosopher Marcel Paquet to provide a suite of small works as catalogue covers for a New New Painting group exhibition sponsored in 1993 by the Walloon Cultural Ministry of the Belgian Government, held at the Grande Palais in Bruxelles. The catalogue never materialized, but I made the 11 3/4 x 9 3/4 inch collages using off-cut pieces from other paintings, and they are included here as the 'Bruxelles Suite'. |
